Killed at Vimy Ridge at 20. Remembered here though he rests in France.
Will Ormsby was a printer's apprentice at the Elderbrook Courier when he enlisted in 1915. He wrote home 63 times; his mother kept every letter, and the family gave them to the cemetery in 2017 for the centenary of Vimy Ridge.
He was killed on the first morning of the battle, April 9, 1917. Like most Canadians who died overseas he was buried near where he fell. His parents had his name carved on their own stone at Hollowmere so there would be a place to visit at home.
Each Remembrance Day a student from Elderbrook District High School reads one of his letters at the cenotaph.
