Carved more than 300 of Hollowmere's markers and the bench by the Mere.
Teodor Wiśniewski trained as a stone carver in Kraków and came to Ontario in 1928. He worked the quarries at first, then opened Elderbrook Monument Works in 1935. For forty years, if a family in town ordered a headstone, he most likely cut it.
His work is easy to spot once you know it: deep, crisp V-cut letters and small oak leaves tucked into corners. The cemetery's self-guided "Mason's Walk" visits twenty of his stones.
He began his own marker, a granite oak log, in 1977. His son Jan finished it after his death.
